APPAREL PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT
Turning a clothing idea into a production-ready sample takes more than sewing a first version. The pattern, fabric, measurements, trims, and construction details all need to work together before a brand commits to bulk production.
In this guide, HaoboMFG explains our clothing sample development process, from reviewing a reference image or tech pack to approving the sample for production.
Watch the clothing sample development process
This video shows the hands-on work behind apparel development: reviewing specifications, developing patterns, checking construction details, and preparing a sample that can be measured, tested, and improved.
1. Review the reference and technical requirements
We begin with the information available: a reference garment, sketch, measurement chart, tech pack, fabric idea, or a combination of these. Our team checks the intended silhouette, size range, construction, trims, decoration, and delivery target.
If the brief is incomplete, we identify the decisions that could affect fit, cost, or production feasibility before pattern work begins. This prevents avoidable revisions later.
2. Build the pattern and measurement plan
A production-ready sample needs a pattern that translates the design into measurable garment pieces. We develop the pattern, confirm key points of measure, and check how the pieces will join during sewing.
For brands that need a complete specification package, our tech pack and pattern-making service can organize construction notes, measurements, grading requirements, and fit details before sampling.
3. Select fabric, trims, and construction details
Fabric weight, stretch, recovery, hand feel, shrinkage, and color can all change the way a garment fits. We help match the material and trims to the intended product and production quantity, then confirm details such as labels, zippers, buttons, thread, and finishing.
What makes a sample useful?
A useful sample is not only visually similar to the reference. It should also communicate the construction, measurements, materials, and finishing standards that the bulk factory team will follow.
4. Make the first sample and correct the fit
Once the pattern and materials are ready, the first sample is made for review. We compare the garment against the brief, measure the key points, and record corrections for the next version.
Clear feedback at this stage is valuable. Brands can send marked-up photos, fit comments, updated measurements, or a revised tech pack so the next sample moves closer to approval.
5. Complete quality checks before bulk production
Before a sample is released for production, the construction, measurements, appearance, and finishing are reviewed. HaoboMFG works with a professional QC team to help identify issues early and keep approved details consistent during bulk production.
What to send when requesting a sample
- Reference images, sketches, or an existing garment
- Tech pack, measurement chart, or target size range
- Fabric and trim preferences, if already selected
- Sample quantity, bulk quantity, and delivery destination
- Brand labels, artwork, packaging, and special finishing requirements
How long does clothing sample development take?
HaoboMFG typically completes sample development within 15 days once the required information and materials are confirmed. Bulk production is usually planned around one month, depending on the style, quantity, materials, and approval schedule. Our minimum order quantity is 50 pieces per style and color.

Ready to develop your next sample?
Send us your reference image, sketch, or tech pack with your quantity and destination. Our team can review the brief, confirm the next practical step, and advise on materials, timing, and production fit through the HaoboMFG contact page.
Sample approval checklist before a bulk order
Use one written approval record to connect the sample room with the production team. Record the approved sample version and keep any unresolved decisions separate from approved details.
- Base-size measurements, agreed tolerances and the required size range.
- Fabric composition, weight, color reference and any agreed wash or shrinkage checks.
- Seam construction, pocket and closure details, and reinforcement points.
- Artwork dimensions and placement, label wording, trims and packaging.
- Quantity by size and color, final inspection requirements and delivery destination.
What changes the sample development schedule?
Custom fabric sourcing, unavailable trims, special decoration and additional fit revisions can extend the schedule. HaoboMFG normally plans sample development within 15 days after specifications and materials are confirmed. Ask for a project-specific schedule; a launch date should also allow time for your review, any agreed revisions and shipping.
